An atheist does not believe in a higher power. An agnostic isn't sure if there is one or not, and typically an agnostic doesn't go seeking for spirituality or answers to that question.

An agnostic is an atheist who prefers sitting on the fence.
An atheist is a person who does not believe in God(s), the reason is irrelevant. Agnostics are atheists.
Additional comment:
Albert Einstein was an atheist.

I would offer the following to clarify the difference:
You are walking along a beach and you see an old man in a robe. He raises his arms and the ocean parts in half.
The aetheist assumes an earthquake has started and a tsunami is now going to wipe out the city. The agnostic, approaches the old man and asks:How did you do that?

The atheist is as convinced of the rightness of his/her faith in the non-existence of God as any fundamentalist Christian is of the opposite. Neither extreme is noted for producing thinking, logical people. But they DO make good examples of the dangers of extremism.
The agnostic doesn't really believe, but just in case he/she's wrong, bets are hedged, usually by trying to live a morally upright life.

an atheist does not believe in god, the devil, or any divine being. An agnostic is not sure (undecided) what to believe
did you hear about the dislexic, agnostic, insomniac? He laid awake all night wondering if there really is a dog.

Technically:
Agnosticism deals with lack of knowledge, (Gnostic from the Greek; "to know, or to have knowledge". The 'A' prefix means without)
Atheism deals with the lack of belief (Theism meaning "of god, or a belief in a god, and again the 'A' prefix means without)
So to conclude:
(A)Gnosticism = deals with knowledge, or the lack of.
(A)Theism = deals with belief in a god, or the lack of.
I am an "Agnostic Atheist". In other words; "I have no knowledge of god. Due to this lack of knowledge, I choose not accept God as a belief.
Regardless of their assertions Christians are actually "Agnostic Theists" they also have no knowledge of god, but they decide for other reasons to believe in the concept.

atheists aren't extremists and are not stupid.
and by the way, anyone, regardless of religion, can be extreme or an idiot. it depends on the person, not the religion.
saying you're an atheist doesn't automatically mean that you're smart either.
