I'm kind of puzzled about why you, as a self-described "non-religious person," would go into a site designed for religion and then ask this question. I mean, aren't you asking why you're here, too?
For me, I think it's partly about education. I'm not an Atheist, but I like that there are Atheists here, posting to the Religion & Spirituality board, because their POV is a part of the whole picture. And everyone has a spiritual side, even if some people like to claim otherwise.
It's also partly about taking people down a notch when they get really smug. That's petty, I know, but some of the so-called "Christians" on this site
seem to spend a lot of time asking questions that are designed to just make them feel better about themselves, and that does breed resentment. Especially when they wrap their prejudices up in the guise of piety, which I see a lot of.
And, yeah, partly it's out of a resentment of the damage that religious fundamentalists seem to be doing in this country and the world. And in a sense that's not fair, because the real damage is being done by leaders and fanatics, but then in a sense it is fair, because a part of the way they do this damage is through the voters, and that's all of us.

I'm probably going to get some flack for this, but here goes.
First, because many, many people have issues with the following:
1. Organized religion. It's all political and has very little to do with god.
2. Folks who shove religion down your throat. It's very trying to talk with a person who has complete blind faith and isn't open-minded enough to even TRY to understand another spiritual viewpoint without condemning you to hell every 3 minutes.
3. Sheep following the herd, bleating ceaselessly about scripture and bible verses about gays and Harry Potter and creationism, and yet they don't mention the countless OTHER bible verses that they don't follow.
Secondly, I think that many people, particularly those who have recently converted from Christianity and those who are atheists or agnostics, see people blindly following some arcane rules, self-righteously proclaiming that gays should just "be abstinent and repent" and other miscellaneous crap, and get really fed up at the closed-mindedness.
I try not to be disrespectful of other people's beliefs. However, when someone is spouting drivel in my face and condemning me for mine, I get a little less tolerant. For the most part I feel, to each their own. For some faiths, though, it's part of their make-up to convert everyone they come across, or to show them the "error of their ways".

Well as someone who does not believe in god I can say Ive never harassed any believers on this site. I have pointed out that I think they are wrong but that's not harassment, that's just a opinion.
I have seen people having a go at each other, they're are a lot of religious people who have a go at non-believers too you know.

I think you have this issue backwards. At least from my point of view anyway. I have seen nothing but people bashing atheists, people calling non believers "stupid", or any other moronic name. Everybody has their own beliefs, some believe, some don't. Everybody is different, and everybody is entitled to his/her own opinion no matter the issue. I could not care any less whether or not somebody believes in God, a horse, a rat, or whatever else they may find to be a form of an idol.....just don't push that religion, or belief upon me.

You probably don't even realize how ironic that question really is.
How many people have been put to death for no reason other than their refusal to adopt the current popular myth (religion)?
If the truth bothers you, why do you log onto to the I'net?
Do you seriously believe people with access to the I'net have not heard the bible fairy tales?
additional comment:
I was a practicing Christian for over thirty years, was born into a Christian (Baptist) family and it is a fact that supernatural entities, including "Gods," do not exist in fact. I'm an atheist because I prefer facts to fairy tales.
Fairy tales are for children, not adults.

I for one, am trying to get across the idea that you shouldn't push your religion down someones throat.
For instance there is some church that has organized protests at arlington national cemetary. They are saying that a soldiers death is gods revenge for that solder being gay.
There is no evidence that the soldiers are gay. It's just that they see: Dead? oh, you must be gay.
It's crazy.
Then there is the issue that I have with you religious types that are trying to push the bibles laws (as you see them) into the laws of our country. To that I say I will NEVER live under your supposedly moral laws. Because the laws in the bible are NOT MORAL.
So STOP PUSHING YOUR ANTI FREEDOM AGENDA!!!

you are right,we don't have the right to make fun or harm people just because they have there own opinions and believes
but you know history teaches us that religion is not just a nice ''beliefs and faith''
i am very sorry to tell that but there are a lot of people killing each other because they have DIFFERENT RELIGIONS
so i think this is why there are people like me who think religions is just trouble ,not because anybody has anything personally with you
you know we are free to decide for our selves until we do not WANT to decide for the other or force our opinions on others by life or death

Some question their beliefs, other do it cause their anonymous. And then there are those who feel that some with beliefs like to stick it to people with different beliefs so they feel an eye for an eye. I think it is just another way that shows we have along way to go as the human race.

I wish I could understand that too. I mean, they must have a better thing to do with their time. It's like they are really really full of anger and Yahoo Answers worked as an outlet to let out their suppressed anger and upset those who have different opinions, faiths and beliefs. It's very narrow minded isn't it?

its not just the atheists who have a go, its everyone.
if it isn't the muslims bashing the jews, or the christians bashing the muslims, its the atheists bashing the christians. everyone at each other's throats, doesn't matter what religion they are.
but it all boils down to ignorance and insecurity.
although sometimes a person will say something SO out there that i feel obligated to put their feet on the ground.
