I had helped someone in a nearby shop at work fix the thermostat on his car. He seemed kind of overly nice and his overall mannerisms kind of gave me a gut feeling about him. He offered to pay for lunch for fixing his car. Thats when the problems started. I wanted to have a decent conversation about something normal like women or cars or sex. traditional guy talk. But somehow he steered every subject i started into the bible! I am not 6 years old i know about God, I didnt live under a rock. Can they not tell i am unconfortable being preached to in a cult like way? I seriously wanted to sacrifice him with chair but being put in this awkward situation i decided to lean in and tell him i am the anti-christ so he can shut the hell up about how sinful i am for having premarital sex with my girlfriend. Seriously, what makes them so righteous pushing their beliefs on people?

Born agains are the worst. They are usually ex whores, sluts alcoholics and drug abusers...The worst of the lot,but when the spirit of God hits, and you realize the healing effect of it,it makes you want to spread the miracle of what happened. Now,however, most do not know the difference between;witnessing, and being pushy and annoying.the Born again christian is the greatest tool of the devil.they will push you away from God quicker than satan himself. Most totally forget the book of Matthew, where it is very clear about Judging another.i usually just listen to them, then when they least expect it,I go into full attack mode of quoting book, chapter and verse, then they realize I already know God,better than them, and they leave me alone

Hey Matt.

First of all, all Christian aren't like the guy you met. And I'm sorry your lunch didn't go as well as it could have. Some Christians feel that it's better to preach to the choir instead of just LISTENING. Most people know about/of God and Jesus Christ, but what Christian's don't seem to get is that it isn't so much BEATING YOU OVER THE HEAD with the Bible that needs to happen, but listening and really hearing someone.

Some Christians believe that they are above everyone else because they've been saved. Truly... Getting Dunked in a bit of water, doesn't make you a Christian. It's an outward expression of an inward desire to tell others that you have accepted Christ. Reading your Bible will only get you so far. Going to Church will only get you so far as well.

Christians were sinners once, just like non-believers, some just don't seem to understand that they're faith isn't dependent upon the amount thumping they do, but the amount of love and understanding they give away.

Blessings in your pursuit...

What I don't understand is why you didn't just tell him that you don't want to talk about that. Straight out. I am not interested in the Bible! Done and over with. Why do people think it is rude to state their needs but not rude of the other person that is spouting theirs? Some how it has been a non-spoken rule that if someone is talking about GOD that we all need to be quiet and respectful. Tell them to be quiet in a respectful way and you get to enjoy your lunch thinking about cars, sex, and women.

I understand what you are saying, but where I would slightly disagree with you is that this type of behavior is limited to "Bible thumpers". Not all devout Christians try to push their beliefs on others who are unreceptive. The The world is made up of diverse people...a lot of personalities...a lot of different experiences. I recently encountered someone similar to the person you described, and they weren't religious at all. It was a "reformed smoker". Despite the fact that this person had smoked for many years, he was now lecturing a friend of mine about tobacco usage (and in a harsh, condescending, way). Typically, those who lecture the loudest are those who are trying to "rectify their own past mistakes"...

Bible thumpers, or Bible Bashers as their known over here are annoying for the very reasons you've pointed out (in doing so pretty much answering your own question)

They believe in their beliefs so strongly that they cannot help but force their opinions upon you.

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, problems only arise when people try to force their beliefs on you

Of course this does not apply to all who are religious, just those that can't stop preaching their beliefs on you

To be honest with you being God's children we are told to go out and preach the gospel, knowing full well that we may meet people such as yourself who will deny Christ. But at least he has done what he was meant to do. It is then up to you to decide whether or not you will accept God into your life. It is your choice such as it was our choice to choice God.

It gives them a sense of superiority, power & authority in their otherwise meaningless, useless life.

It isn't so much their message, it's their smarmy, "I'm so good" attitude they adopt when they preach to the unwilling.

Of course, that usually changes to a snarling, hateful attitude when you explain that the bible is nonsense and bible believers are weak minded morons incapable of thinking for themselves.

Don't have a good answer for you, but I sympathize with you. Been there, done that.

Have you ever noticed how new parents or grandparents act? Or even men who have fallen madly, hopelessly in love with the woman of their dreams? They constantly talk about the object of their love, showing photos, regaling friends, acquaintances and sometimes even strangers with the daily telling of anecdotes. Why? Because they are in love with those babies or with that woman. It is love that compels them. Their hearts are simply overflowing with love and amazement - these tiny creatures or that perfect woman has captured the heart. Sometimes we roll our eyes in annoyance, sometimes we smile indulgently – unless of course we just had kids of our own or we just fell madly in love. Then we get it, don't we?

It is similar with true Christians. What they sometimes do is illustrative of the principle Christ referenced at Matthew 12:34: "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." (New King James Version). These parents or this man are speaking out of the abundance of love overflowing in their hearts. And true Christians too are speaking from an abundance of love and appreciation that is overflowing in their hearts. They want to share this good news with those who don't know. For those who do know, they want to talk about it – share this degree of appreciation. It may be that many are overzealous and have difficulty keeping it just under 7.5 on the Richter scale. But perhaps we can be satisfied with rolling our eyes like we do with overzealous parents instead of ridiculing, denouncing or deriding them.

I believe there is a major difference in bashing someone over the head with a bible judging them and someone who is persistent because they care. Us "born again's" need to watch how we say things as it is a touchy subject. (meaning God and Christ)

They have learned all the ways of the lord except for acceptance they feel the need to justify all that they do and if you are on their side that is easier to do noting is wrong with them but they do need to accept that not everyone can believe with every inch of themselves as they do.
