I just want to STRESS that the asker of the question (ME) DOES NOT think that Kustutica's films accurately portray life in the Balkans!!!

Nisam glupa!!! I actuactly found his recent film "Zivot je Cudno" a very disturbing presentation of the war in Bosnia..and an insult to women who were the victims of rape there.....

Nor have I seen many fat women who open bottles in that unusual way :-)

Oops..Sorry I had a little hissy fit..I think it was the weather :-(

I'm sure everybody is aware that I'm not clueless about the Balkans (Well I hope so!)

I agree with others: definitely no! And I also agree that his films are too dark, I don't like them either... But I don't think that his films are meant to be realistic at all but artistic, and that's just the trouble: most people who aren't from around here don't get that and think that's how we live and who we are... It would be like if anyone saw "Amarcord" thought that there is really such a place in Italy, just because there aren't scary Hollywood monsters to make it impossible...
I like the tradition of Romany people, their gift to play as if they were born with an instrument in their hands, and I get Kusturica's obsession with them but I just don't think his films present all the people on the Balkans as they are...
BTW I also think that no film made about this (or any other) war show us accurately either, as always only one side of the story can be seen...

no!!!!!! thanks goodness...

but he portrays well a small part of Serbian society (you know that most of his films are about Romani people), and they are quite isolated, and very specific minority here.

do you really think, that the most population here lives in those terrible conditions like a lot of Kusturica's characters do.

you like "underground"?? did you find two "normal" persons in that film?? Sorry, but we are not all that crazy.

ok.. ok don't be mad...:)))))

but you asked does he present an accurate portrayal of Balkans, and we all agree NO!! That includes the film you mentioned.. I can not comment it since I have not seen it, and I don't think I ever will

I know you know that, but this is what you have asked.

anyway, I do not like Kusturica's films, they are to dark, sometimes to violent, and not very realistic.

Balkan is not more specific than South of Italy or Spain, or continental France, maybe. But, its geographic position is.
E.Kusturica is only part of the mosaic, a brand of his own.
You better try with "Profesionalac"-could you put there people from any country? The story goes on in Belgrade, but it is not much different than elsewhere.
