Practically all white (i.e. clear) vinegar is distilled. The distillation process removes all impurities that might later affect color or taste of the food it is used in. There used to be some cheap white vinegars made from wood pulp, but I don't think they are available to consumers in food grade any more. They were notorious for their unpredicatable results in pickling. The appelation 'distilled' was used to indicate that a white vinegar was appropriate for pickling.

There are some non-distilled white vinegars, such as white rice vinegar and white wine vinegar, but they are usually substantially more expensive, and are used when their specific flavor attributes are desired.

Distilled white vinegar can be found at virtually any grocery store. It is mostly a chemical called acetic acid, an organic weak acid.

Stumped me for a minute so hit the web and sure enough I found it. Link below for one site. Since it puzzled me I went to the cupboard and discovered I had some already ;-) Since I only shop at Publix (southern grocery store for you folks up North), I'd guess you should be able to get it at your local store as well.
