Mindless repetition of words and phrases is a very crude form of brainwashing, which all sects use extensively - from the temple of the sun and scientology to islam and christianity, it's all the same thing - people learn to repeat things word for word and end up believing those words even if they are completely meaningless and stupid.

Check the very first of the 10 Commandments, you of little faith!

1. You (that means YOU) shall have no other gods before me.....for I the Lord your God am a jealous god, PUNISHING CHILDREN FOR THE INIQUITY OF THEIR PARENTS, TO THE THIRD AND THE FOURTH GENERATION OF THOSE WHO REJECT ME, BUT SHOWING STEADFAST LOVE TO THE THOUSANDTH GENERATION OF THOSE WHO LOVE ME AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS!!!!!!!

So come on, be reasonable, you owe it to your kids and theirs for evermore!!!!!! A little praise won't hurt ya - the real crunch comes in the New Testament Heaven, where ALL YOU DO is sing praises to the Lord. Now, seriously, is that your idea of a good time? And are your vocal chords up to it?

Something all these answers seem to miss. Pray and praise of G-d is not for his benefit. It is a focus to appreciate things better, a means of comfort for the believer, etc..

An infinite being by definition has no needs.

We need to praise Allah all the time for:
* all the blessings He bestowed on us - have you ever tried to count Allah's blessings on you? How long is the list?
* being so patient with us
* not destroying us in spite of all the sins that justify it and in spite of His capability to do it
* guiding us through life and supporting us during hardship and prosperity

Alhamdulellah
