The gist of the quotation is: there are no words that can console you for the loss of your mother, so I won't even try.

I really thought this was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning to her husband, Robert, but I cannot seem to find it attributed to her. I have also tried various keyword searches of online quotation sites using keywords such as death, mother, consolation, grief, etc, and I am not finding it anywhere. If you can identify the person who said it (I do know it was in a condolence letter!), I can probably take it from there.

Thank you.

"Never does one feel oneself so utterly helpless as in trying to speak comfort for great bereavement. I will not try it. Time is the only comforter for the loss of a mother."
