Written language can be more complicated. It can use longer sentences. When someone speaks, there can be things like "uhm" and pauses that make it less fluent. There are words that are common only in one of the types. Spoken language is much older. When people started to record things, pictures preceded signs. Technology also has an influence on communication. The telephone, television and Internet have surely changed the way we speak and write.

Beside the obvious, most spoken language is subject to less rules. f.i. Though the person you speak to must be able to understand you you can abreviate words or even leave them out. On the whole written language has to be more complete to be fully understood.
