Catnip the scratching post so the cat is more interested in it and spray the cat with a water jet stream if it scratches anything else. It may take a few days but so long as you are diligent the cat should get the idea. Another way is to lock the cat in an area where the only thing it has to scratch is the post.
Good luck.

There's a spray that you can buy at your local grocery store, or department store. You have to spray it again after a couple of days, but it has a smell on it that cats do not like.
You could squirt them with a stream of water when you catch them scratching, that can train them too...
Obviously, you could get him declawed, but that can be a little more expensive than the spray :) good luck!

Buy some pet nail clippers! You can get them at walmart or petco. Be careful in the begining and only clip the very tips off-there are tiny blood vessels in the cats nails that will hurt it if you cut too much at first-these recede everytime you cut them. Eventually you will be able to clip them to nubs in about 2 months. I know it sounds scary but it is really easy once you start, I clip both of my cats claws and they don't mind it at all!

Declawing is also another option if your furniture means that much to you. Otherwise use soft paws, they are plastic nail covers that you crazy glue onto your cats' nails.
Good Luck!
