Why can't we just use a wood platform in a bed frame and sit the mattress on this? Or more to the point we know we can but why is the boxspring even needed and offered and thus so hard to find solution to finding a bed frame that supports just a mattress?

How does a boxspring support the mattress better than a wood platform? The wood platform or the floor for that matter is flat and solid and supports as well as the most well constructed box spring.

Check out Christopher Lowell's website on how to build a platform. Even with a box spring, I always put boards across the bedframe for additional support.

Box springs came from a day and time when actual mattresses weren't as comfortable and there was a fashion to have a high bed. So if your mattress is really hard and you want an elevated bed, what do you do-> Box-springs.

Once it caught on it became part of the industry. Which is why it's hard (but not impossible) to find a bed frame that you don't need a box-spring for. It gets you to spend more money when buying a bed, even when you don't really need the springs for comfort now.

You don't need to replace your box spring, if its still in fairly good condition and not cracked, despite what the salesman tells you. Its there to help support the mattress, and give it some stability. The mattresses that do not require a box spring generally have one built in, and the matterss is not flippable Just buy a new matterss the same size as your spring, and you will be fine.

the box springs are for support of the mattress. It's a warranty thing with the manufactor. With out a matching boxspring for your mattress you have no warranty if it starts to give you problems. Most of the time there is a 10 year warranty that comes with the purchase of the mattress and boxspring

Box spring is to support the mattress. From where are you? In my place there are lots of wooden bedframe, there are even steel. I don't understand why you cannot find wooden bedframe there. In Asia there are even bamboo bedframe to support the mattress. Less people are using boxspring nowadays.

Box springs are intended to support the mattress.

That is why it is so hard to find a conventional frame that supports a mattress alone.

Have you considered a waterbed platform to support your conventional mattress?
