I am working with inside corner trim,not crown mold. I am having a heck of a time figuring out how to cut the miters in the corners because the trim sits on an angle, not flat.

I know you said "not crown molding", but frequently the method is the same.

If you are using a miter saw place molding as if were on your wall and then cut at a 45 degree angle

DIY stores sell a mitre just for this task. A worthy and less expensive option. Even a couple of degrees out will mess up the job otherwise!
