Those who claim that the Bible improved the lot of women in history are woefully ignorant.

Well I think you have a confliciting question; the words improved and lot are opposites.

Now the life of a first century Jew (women, because this is the subject) were treated differently than women today. During the first century women were expected to help out with the house, prepare food, help raise children, ect...the difference is they were always second next to their husband, there was no such thing as "women's rights." They were not treated as outcasts or slaves, but if you wanted an answer for something, it was custom to find the husband. During that time there were also some wealthy women, property owners with servants. Reference Acts 16.

Now Jesus went against the social norm of his day and treated women with dignity and respect. The same dignity and respect that would be given to a man during the first century. Jesus did not make any distinction between man and woman in this regard. He loves them equally. Jesus showed the love and care for a woman that was not shown by any other person of that day. Reference John 8, a woman caught in adultry.

Also in the writings of Paul and Peter you will find the role of husbands and wives. Reference Ephesians 5:22-33 and 1 Peter 3:1-7, respectively. Both passages essentially say the same thing but there is one thing that must be understood when reading. The word "submit" is often misunderstood as a one way deal only. This is not the case, what it means is submit wives to husbands and husbands to wives, a mutual submission perserves order and harmony in the family while it increaces love and respect. Submission is a willful choice not a law, but real spiritual leadership (husband, head of house hold [I know some don't like hear this, but this is for the disscussion]) is done through service. Husbands should serve their wives, just as Christ served the church, his disciples, you, and me.

So really we are to "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Ephesians 5:21

It is through Jesus Christ and only Him that the role of women has improved. It is the decision of every individual to either accept or reject His teaching. So it is not the Bible that is the problem, it comes down the the individual.

No you are misguided and do not have a clue about what the Bible says women should be treated like, but yes women have been mistreated but not by those who follow the Bible's advice but by those that don't! Don't you think that you should do some research before you go ahead and make statements that are false! And again when you say in history that would depend on which history you are refering to, Bible history or mans history they are not the same.

The Old Testament was horrible towards women. But there are odd bits in there that were pretty nice - look at the book of Ruth, for example, where a man protected Ruth from anything that the labouring men would do to her. This was the godly way to act. In the New Testament we are taught to love all equally, never mind their sex - this is why we follow the word of Jesus and the New Testament today.

Well, the truth is that the Bible improved the lot of people all over the world... not just women. I do believe that lots of people look at phrases like, "women, obey your husband" and misunderstand what it means and how to apply it to their life. It sounds like you have been on the receiving end of this type of treatment, and I am very sorry. Good luck in dealing with this.

The bible seems to be used as an excuse to treat women like they're lesser humans in a lot of cases- the half of my family that is made up of crazy fundies is CONVINCED that because the bible says so, women should always cook and clean and stay home (no working!) to raise the children.

It drives me up the wall, because I don't even want to have kids, so they're always on my back.

You obviously haven't heard of Abigail, the wife of Nabal. It was by God her life changed for the better. Also, wives are told to be obedient to their husbands because God has deemed that the husband is the head of the household. God is in no way reducing the rights of women, God does not say, "You shall not permit women to vote." He does not say, "You shall not permit women to work." It is so that the family will have the proper organization for optimal spiritual performance and order. Want a chaotic household? All you need is a family that doesn't care about who's in charge.

No, men write the bible, and they take advantage of that, women is an object in the bible

For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

-Paul [I Corinthians 11:8-9]

i do no longer think of the two custom respects women folk quite properly. in spite of the undeniable fact that contained in the west women folk have extra freedom and extra selection. This comes with great duty this is why maximum of problems take place because of the fact maximum of folk are irresponsible. Neo-femism the place women folk gown like sluts because of the fact "they sense solid approximately themselves" and Britney spears claiming to be a virgin then cavorting around on degree like the whore of Babylon does not do something to assist women folk gain admire. we would desire to be extra respectful of another and additionally of ourselves regardless of our concept gadget is. i do no longer believe the way women folk sense obliged to gown in Islamic countries ( i in my view have not got a situation with it regardless of if that is their selection without subjugation) or the way women folk are dealt with because of the fact the valuables of her husband, father or brothers like they're in some countries like Saudi Arabia. in spite of the undeniable fact that I do would desire to believe an Islamic preacher who pronounced, "Which custom do you think of respects women folk extra? Islam which covers its women folk or the west which has to place photographs of 0.5 bare women folk on a container of fits to sell it?" contained in the west we've lost our way yet i do no longer think of the respond comes from the Islamic international.
