Am I supposed to answer this literally or figuratively? Okay the, I'll just do both.
Literally: The Earth is a composite of dust, rock (formed by lava) and clay at its core.)
Figuratively #1: The theory of the turtle(s) is ancient, and due to the fact the the land shifted, thus the idea of a turtle carrying the land on its back through the sea. It had to be a turtle, since the land moved slowly.
Figuratively #2: Atlas bearing the world on his shoulders, was similar to the belief that Jesus took on all the sins of all mankind when he died on the cross. Atlas carries the burden of all of the world on his shoulders, this was even figurative in its origin, and remains quite figurative today. It wouldn't have much of a different meaning for Christians if we were to place Jesus under the weight of the world, rather than Atlas, though some Pagans, Wiccans, Theologians, and Historians may be quite upset.

~No, the world is supported by one turtle according to the religions that subscribe to this particular version of Genesis. There are four of them, but they work in shifts.

That is so funny!!! Actually it is supported by 4 blocks of Philadelphia cream cheese, but they have to keep replacing them because they start to melt. But they will soon see your idea and try to buy it off of you. So don't take any deal they make. Try to make some big wads of cash off of this goldmine.

no It is Atlas that holds the earth on his shoulders. Funny how he always holds a sphere even though supposedly people thought that the world was flat.
