There are white females teaching in Iraq too! China is a much better and safer place. The conditions in china has changed for good in the last 3-4 years.I dont think it wud be any more difficult to be a teacher in china than at any other place.

There's a single white female a few yards from me as I write, in Fuzhou, Fujian province (opposite Taiwan); she loves it so much she just keeps coming back year after year. Others I've known are the same - someone said on here you get treated like royalty and it's true! The first time you walk into your classroom you'll get a standing ovation. (By the way, it's polite to clap back, which indicates "I don't deserve this as much as you do." If you just nod a thank you it seems conceited to Chinese.)
You WILL inevitably stick out, but as an automatically beautiful thumb (my daughter found this both flattering and irritating). You shouldn't have trouble if you set the ground rules - like no Chinese guys in rooms alone with you - though even then most students are really respectful. And best to go out at night with a group of friends rather than alone - but that applies in the 'safe' places at home nowadays!
I wonder if those saying "NO!" to your question have been to China?
All the best - hope you come and have a great time! Feel free to keep in touch.

China has changed over the last 10-15 years... If you interested in teaching abroad, you should pick big cities like Beijing or Shanghai. There are actually a lot of foreigners there working currently. Many foreign companies has opened up branches, stores and factories there because labor is cheap. However, they still send "their" people to manage the staffs. So, if you are afraid of the smaller cities and villages because they are not as populated, then don't make them as your choices. But Shanghai is equivalent to NYC in the U.S. Yes, the city that NEVER sleeps!! Literally, and there's actually "nicer" areas where all the foreigners hang out like restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs and etc... whatever you name, they have it... You should go check out any online chat forums and see what other people say. But I'm pretty sure they will tell you to GO!!!! You won't regret it, it will be a experience of a lifetime.... Good luck!!

That could be a great fun, there are plenty of foreign teachers who are teaching in China, you better chose any one of big countries, people from around the world are moving to China it is a great place to be there. I am a frequent flier to China and I am also planning to move to China permanently. It is place to live at. Yes a little bit Miltie cultural society. Communication is a little problem although, one can learn basic Chinese after a continuous living for a few months. As far as I think China could be a future's place to live.

china is extremely safe. i absolutely love it there. if you are unsure about teaching, but want to get a feel of whether or not china is for your or not, maybe you should do a study abroad program. a lot of schools offer programs that are open to people of all ages. i studied at beijing language and cultural university, beijing university, and shanghai jiaotong university. all very good schools...and you get to meet people from all over the world. it's a great experience. i had a friend that also attended fudan university in shanghai, and loved it as well. either way, i dont think that you'll be disappointed with china. every province and city offers something new, different, and amazing. you will never get bored!!

You'll stick out allright.
All laowai do here.
Chinese schools love employing single white females here in China.
The gullible isolated female individual is always easier to control than a man any day.
If you don't care about being exploited, sure come.

The university I attend recently opened a campus in china. I think you are fine but make sure you have the option to leave if relations between the US and China deteriorate.

My neice, 26 is in Seoul, Korea since last fall. She's loving it. She's met great friends, she's been travelling up a storm and has had many back home visitors come to see her. My brother just got back and said he took a tour into China while he was over there and he was treated like royalty - people were friendly and wanted to help and considered him a guest in their country.
p.s., my neice is a red head - she said it took a bit of getting used to with people all wanting to touch her hair!

You'll be fine if you stick to the big costal cities. Why not teach in South Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan?
