All who claim to worship the one true God, are required to direct worship to God and God alone.

Exodus 20
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying,
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

There are 6 different words from the Greek rendered into English as "worship" so unfortunately many passages give the wrong impression as to what is meant

The most common Greek word rendered into English as worship is "proskunew" and this has the meaning "(meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage "

However it must be noted that this word can and is used for anyone in a position of authority.

There are other Greek words rendered worship that have the application in "a religious way" Only to God should we give such worship. This type of worship is to do with religious worship.

So in John 4:23,24, even though this word is not referring to religious worship in the context of this verse ..... "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth" (RSV) ......it is telling us the attitude we must have in showing Honor to God. When we show honour to God we must do so with the right attitude, one of truth

There are a few texts that say Jesus was worshipped. The word for worship in these texts is the same one that is used in John John 4:23,,24. Meaning that Jesus was, and is, to be shown due honour for the possition he holds.

However no where in the Bible does it say Jesus was to RECEIVE RELIGIOUS WORSHIP. We are only to render sacred service to the "Almighty", the God and Father of Jesus
