That situation used to bug me too. The reason that the receptionist is required to know the problem is that they need to know how long to book your appointment. They schedule slots usually 15-30-45 min, etc. I know it is uncomfortable, but there is a reason for it. Once I understood the WHY of it, I felt better about giving the information.
Hopefully this will help you too :)

You are the patient - therefore, you are the profit. They are the overhead, they are there to make you happy. The only reason they really need to know is so that they can allow enough time for the appt. If you are not comfortable telling them anything, you can ask to have the Dr call you back and speak to him/her directly. They will then be able to determine how long an appt should be.

Realize that even if you spend 10 minutes on the phone with him/her - she is going to write 6 words or less in the chart for the doctor. So even if you have 20 different symptoms, just say "I have a cold" or something generic as this is what she will most likely write down anyhow.

This is one of those situations where it is better to play ignorant.

I hate that when they ask me what is wrong. If I knoew what was wrong, I wouldn't need to see a doctor.
