statistics would be numbers and facts that relate to your topic (for example: # of states that allow gay marriage)
"illustrating the numbers" just means that you put the numbers that you found (your statistics) into a graph or chart.

collect all ur figure and determine ur x and y axis values.then plot the line accordingly......
