They usually snort when they get something in their nose.
Be sure it's a snort, not the snuffling noise they make if they have trachea trouble. Collapsing trachea is a problem with some smaller dogs.

I wish you would describe it better. My Yorkie makes certain noises that I've never heard another dog make. The reverse sneeze is something a lot of dogs do, so I kind of think that is not what you mean. Someone mentioned collapsing tracheas...I asked the vet about that once and she told me that the sign of that is coughing, not breathing funny.

it is like a backward sneeze, often if they are excited they will do this to get them to stop cover their nostal for a moment and they will go back to breathing normal. If it is just doing all the time without cause it might have Kennel cough or bordettela it's a cold of the doggie world. You can get a shot to prevent it (like a flu shot) or I believe the vet has something that will help them get over it faster.

i know that some small dogs have tracheomalacia and they snort or quack.

it's a floppy airway and when air passes through forcefully, they can sound like any animal but a dog! it freaks kids out at petsmart!!

It's called a reverse sneeze. They do it on purpose to clear their sinuses. Don't worry, it's a natural instinct in them and they are doing it for good reason.
