i was driving on I-95 one day, and this pick up truck right in front of me was carrying some furnitures, and i think the driver didn't secure them good enuff, so a big chair fell out, and he kept driving unaware of it. Then, luckily i was able to swerve into the next lane right at the last moment to avoid the consequences, and even more luckily (for other people), there weren't any cars real close by at that time, so i don't think anyone else behind me had problems later, but see my point? Should pick-up trucks be discontinued from production, and the existing ones' owners be penalized in some way for owning one? They're a menace to (driving) society.

People!!! It's very easy to say that the driver should be penalized, ticketed, go to jail, and what not...but, that's ONLY if he stops, or get caught, right? But, for the ones that cause death to other motorists, and just drive off (unawares or not), WTF do you do? TELL ME, ya freakin' pick-up truck lovers!!!

Anyways, now i make it a point never to drive in the same lane as a pick-up truck anymore, and i warn ALL my friends and relatives to do the same before they hit the road, and those that agree with me should do the same.

Pickup drivers need to be more careful to secure their loads! A guy was carrying a truckload of flattened cardboard boxes in his pickup once; one of them flipped up, caught the air and landed on my windshield! I barely managed to stop without hitting the guy. I was so angry I couldn't talk, I just wanted to pummel the guy for his stupidity. When he saw my face, he was so scared he pulled a bunch of cash out of his wallet and handed it to me. That wasn't what I wanted, but he took off before I could collect myself.

A friend of mine witnessed a more serious accident when a truck carrying loose lumber hit a bump and lost part of the load. My friend managed to swerve off the road and avoid getting hit by the logs. The car behind him got it through the windshield. He stopped to give the guy first aid (the other driver got a broken arm) and the truck was gone. Probably never even knew he lost part of his load.

About three years ago, a white pickup carrying a ladder on top lost the ladder. An elderly man swerved to avoid hitting the ladder, but hit the guard rail instead and was killed. The police have never been able to find the driver of the white pickup.

IF YOU DRIVE A PICKUP, FOR GOODNESS SAKE, SECURE YOUR LOAD! PUT A TARP OVER IT OR STRAP IT DOWN, OR GET A LID, BUT DO SOMETHING! Don't just weight it down with something that will flip out and become a danger.

Sorry to yell about it, but this is important and it is a danger to everybody on the road. Any cop would write the guy up for creating a public menace. If he actually caused an accident, the driver would be liable for jail time and all kinds of damages.

Not the pickups fault...its the driver of the pickup.

I drive a dump truck for a living, it can carry 22 tons of gravel.
I have to make sure that all ...even the smallest of stones...are INSIDE the box of the truck, and that the gate is secure so none can fall out on the highway. I am responsible for paying for your window if one falls out of my truck and breaks your windshield.

Same kinda thing for pick-ups....whatever you put in there is your responsibility to tie down securely. The driver of the truck you encountered should have been at least ticketed. If he would have caused an accident...I'm sure he could have been sued.

They shouldn't be discontinued from production because they're might useful to some people. The problem you stated is due to the fact that there are a lot of cheapskates out there who'd rather endanger the lives of other motorists than hire a U-Haul truck or other moving services.

Also, the cops should warn these people or something that what they're doing is dangerous.

this should be on a per-idiot basis. some people cant even handle a modern, fully equipped pickup, yet i, at 16, have NO trouble handling a 1972 Chevrolet with NO power steering or brakes, and hardly any brakes to begin with. this thing is damn near impossible for the average pickup owner to control, assuming they can even get it onto the road at all. the reason it's so much safer? the way i drive it. 40MPH is the highest i take it off of the freeway unless the speed limit is 55. 65 is what i take it to on the freeway, and any and all loads are secured to the point the bed's gonna fall off long before the load comes out of it. i would be screwed without that old truck of mine, penalizing us because we drive trucks is akin to socialism or facsism. you should only penalize those stupid enough to do these acts, not those who acually know wtf they're doin with their trucks

I was driving down the road one day in my pickup truck and this car swerves into the other lane. I was able to miss him and luckily he did not cause any other accidents. Cars should be discontinued from production because they are dangerous, don't you think? Then again, maybe it was just this one idiot, like the idiot who didn't tie down the chair. Don't jump to conclusions like this, pickups are very useful. Anything if not used properly can cause problems. Blame the person, not the product!

We are in agreement on this one. First of all it should be mandatory for everyone carrying a load in a pick up that each item or the load be secured with a specific cargo strap and a netting to ensure it does not catch air and fly out. This does not mean a bunji cord. That does not work. Not only should these people be ticketed they should be sent to a driving school that shows them graphic photos of accidents caused by such stupidity.

I happen to have owned at least 18 pickup trucks so far during my life and I still have many years of driving left and I plan on having a truck when they finally take away my licence. Learn to live with it. Maybe you should have gotten on your cell phone and reported the licence plate of the truck that dropped the chair to start with. Ever think of that. When I see things going wrong on the highway I call the local cops immediately. I see cars with the trunk lid up hauling junk just like truck with junk falling out too, so lets ban cars too. Hey 2 points for me.

I think pick up trucks are fine to be on the highways, I just think that if someone IS driving with big furnature, then they should at least make sure it doesn't fall out. It it does, thry sould be heavily penelized. Things like that could cause major accidents and maybe even some deaths.

The guy didn't tie down his load so we should discontinue all truck and penalize owners? A little drastic don't you think. It will never happen because people actually..get this...use them for work, jobs and useful things. Just because you don't stop trying to generalize all owners from one incident.

Driving a truck myself, I would have to say that the menace is people that tailgate and don't give themselves enough room to react in case something falls off of said truck.

Another thing I just thought of is when I'm trailering horses and someone is right on my tail, I love it when one of the horses lets a load go and it splatters all over their windshield. Vindication. They'll back off next time.
