My son is 14 months old and he has been really constipated lately. I've tried giving him apple juice, pear juice, prunes and nothing works. My sister told me suppositories, but I want that to only be a last resort. I feel so bad for him, but I just don't know what to do anymore. Any more ideas?

If your child doesn't drink enough water, milk or fruit juices, or if your child doesn't get a healthy diet or eat enough fiber, constipation may be the result.

Fiber is found in foods such as cereals, grains, fruits and vegetables. If you give your child baby food for too long a time, or feed your child a diet high in meat, fatty foods or refined sugars (candy and desserts), your child will probably not be getting enough fiber.

Constipation may also begin when you change your baby from breast milk or baby formula to whole cow's milk. If your small child often ignores the urge to have a bowel movement, he or she may become constipated.

Children who are too busy playing or who are always rushing around may not find time to go to the bathroom. Some children don't like to use public bathrooms because of lack of privacy, dirty conditions or absence of toilet paper. Sometimes constipation happens after your child has been sick or has taken certain medicines.

These are some things you can do to help relieve constipation in your child ...

Diet. You can start by increasing the amount of fluid your child drinks every day. Also, give your baby a bottle of prune juice every day, or add corn syrup or brown sugar to your baby's formula. Ask your doctor how much to add. You can give an older child large quantities of fluids every day, as well as prune juice, bran cereal, fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber.

Bowel habit training. Your child should be taught not to wait to have a bowel movement. To establish a regular bowel habit, ask your child to sit on the toilet for at least 10 minutes at about the same time each day, preferably after a meal. Make sure your child can place his or her feet firmly on the floor while sitting on the toilet. If this is not possible, put a footstool in front of the toilet. While your child is sitting on the toilet, you might let your child read a story book or listen to the radio.

Medicine. Many laxatives are available to treat constipation in children. The choice of laxative depends on the age of your child and how bad the constipation is. Ask your family doctor to suggest a brand name and tell you how much to use.

To get rid of constipation, try all of these things. If the constipation doesn't get better, bring your child to see your family doctor. Sometimes an illness is the cause of the problem.

Your Pediatrician Can Help With Potty Training. If any concerns come up before, during, or after toilet training, talk with your pediatrician. Often the problem or problems are minor and can be resolved quickly, but sometimes physical or emotional causes will require treatment. Your pediatrician's help, advice, and encouragement can help make toilet training easier. Also, your pediatrician is trained to identify and manage problems that are more serious.

Is he on high iron foods or iron supplements? That can be the cause. I have a 4 years old girl and she suffer from constipation since she was 1 year old. Nothing helps a lot. But every kid is different. Have you try prune juice? The suppositories is a good option and will not harm him. My last option ( given by a her doctor) was an enema. I know sounds a bad thing and it is because she cries for about an hour, but it worked. He did it because she was 10 days without poop. But usually she poop every 2 days and it is hard like a rock. If it's get worse I suggest you talk to his doctor about it. The things that I've tried are prune juice, fresh vegetables, suppositories, mineral oil, enema. And give him a lot of water during the day. When I say a lot is not 8 glasses but more than normally he drinks. I know kids don't like water but that's helps too.

Try taking Magnesium Citrate. It is a great laxative and does not normally cause the adominal pain like other over the counter laxatives.

There are many herbal teas that promote bowel movement.

If you are looking for a more organic solution, some people eat a large amount of dried fruit (3 servings) which is high is fiber, but if you are looking for a natural solution, I recommend Optium Cereal which is organic and provides you 45% of the rdv of fiber...

my 2 year old daughter started to hold in her poop and in turn becomes constipated. I do use a suppository because sometimes its the only way to get it out. My doctor also told me to use milk of magnesia this helps to make the poop soft so it can come out. Call your doctor and see how much you can give him. I know how hard this is to watch them suffer like that so good luck!

first of all, try to reduce the amount of infant milk powder by adding more water to it. secondly, try giving him more plain water to drink every now and then. thirdly, gave him some fruits or fruit juices especially papayas, prunes etc. too much infant milk powder without giving additional plain water to drink will create "heatiness" as per asian's concept and the baby will then be constipated.

if juice isn't working the bm. and only the pee. ha!. then try giving him fruits that have edible skin. like plums, peaches, nectarines, apple. the skin on fruits really helps you have a regular bowl movement. and good part of a healthy diet. does he take vitamins every day? anyways, i know that from my counselor, b/c i was constipated once, or if they have any meds for babies like fiber or i don't know. ask your doctor if answer.yahoo.com doesn't help.

My daughters pediatrician told me to give her a teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia(which is natural, anyway). I bought the cherry flavor, my daughter liked it, and it worked. If one doesn't do it try 2.

Everyone wants to tell you what to give him to prevent it when you just asked how to get rid of it. My mom has always told me to use castor oil. Works all the time, everytime.

If he is drinking more than three 8 oz servings of milk or cheese, you may have to cut back on it.
