what do you mean any dvd? like burned dvds from your computer? they should be able to read it

Most DVD players nowadays should be able to read burned discs. If yours can't, you'll need to replace the entire disc reader.
You might as well go and get a new cheap DVD player, since it'll cost a lot less than replacing the reader. Polaroid makes some good ones.

look at the specs on different portable dvd players, make sure they are compatible with dvd-r/+r and then you will know if they read burned disc........most new ones will allready by able to do it, and its not as simple as reprogramming, you are talking WORK.

I think your question is about the different movie formats on the market. My answer is yes. You need to read the owners manual before you purchase a DVD player and see is it is not a simple DVD player or if it is multiformat DVD player...
