my friend was not at school and the told me she had a mental health day. what does that mean?

At work, people who are not really sick will take a day off as a "mental health day" paid for with one of their sick days. It means they just needed a break from work to feel better. I suppose your friend needed a break from school. It's a bit of a bogus excuse, but it sounds better than saying you were goofing off.
