It means they take it word for word. I'm a christian and I don't take it word for word. For example, I think the story of adam and eve is just a story to explain creation, and not something that actually happend. I think something simliar happend, but not exactly that. But I believe everything in the new testament to be exact.

Most people who say that mean that they believe everything in the Bible is a fact. This would include the creation story.
Most Christians don't take the Bible literally -- at least not the early books of the Old Testament. Catholics, who make up over half of the Christian population, tend to believe that the creation story is like Christ's parables.

In some christian churches, they take the term "day" used in the Bible to mean a literal day but also an idefinite amount of time..even years.... and they take it to mean a literal day of 24 hours. Others take the description of the saints in Revelation as having made their clothing white in the blood of the lamb and they wear only white clothes to their church. Others have taken the story of Joshua asking for the Sun to stop in the sky to mean that the Sun revolved around the Earth. The Catholic Church insists that when you take the bread and wine during mass, it literally turns into Christ's flesh and blood in your stomache as if Christ had instituted some kind of canibalistic ritual among his followers. These are just some of the case of what can happen when you take the Bible out of context and take everything as being literal.

Taking the Bible literally means that everything in the Bible happened as written. Even the items that we may consider mythological (such as the story of Adam and Eve) or allegorical (such as the Book of Revelation) are considered real, literal events. In other words, there was an actual Garden of Eden, and the world will end exactly as spelled out in Revelation. Everything in the Bible--even such absurd events as flooding of the ENTIRE world and Joshua's "stopping of the sun"--is considered absolute truth. The idea is that the Bible contains all the knowledge we will ever need, because God supposedly wrote or inspired every single syllable in it, and who are we to question God's honesty or intelligence?

Some christians take the word of the Bible very literally meaning that they believe and follow all of the apostles and christ words to the T.
Not all of the christians in the world are like this but some have taken rules and codes of context from theBible and follow it strictly.

In my mind, it means, to be unable to comprehend the stories in any manner other than the Physical and from a historic perception, To be able to use the images portrayed in a Spiritual
sense, to adapt themes and ideas toward bettering the way one deals with their own existence, can, in my own experience, (Spiritually) awaken - You will physically (and Spiritually)sleep if you sit down and read it as a battle sequence, or a historical series of struggles, but doesnt that pretty well sum up the history of mankind, - a series of Spiritual struggles.
keeping in mind that although "inspired by spirit" it was written by less than perfect men, subject to their own fears and anxieties, politics, and religions of the day.
When you read the good book with good intentions in search of the truth, then ye shall find.
Peace Love and Light.

It means they believe everything the Bible says, exactly. They believe Adam and Eve made everyone else, that Noah got two of everything on an ark, that it is a work of historical non-fiction.

We believe the Bible is true, beginning, to end. Jesus is the living word and, the Bible is the written word. No questions asked! We take God for His word, and believe it all.

Only a Christian would understand. A non-believer will not see the truth in the scripture, because it is revealed by faith, by the Spirit of God. So, a non-Christian cannot possibly understand.
