Why do some people get white streaks or white patches in their hair? (I mean naturally and prematurely)

I think it's something called not enough melanin. My son has a gray hair ever since he was born the rest of his hair was black but it turned light brown so now I have to hunt for his gray hair if I wanted to know if it was still there.

i was told that if you get hit in the head it will cause hair in that area to turn white.Dont know if its true. but Ive seen guys with it.

this happens when you have a birthmark on your scalp .
