No. Unless they said it like: You will fail in life if you - continue to do drugs (fill in with anything else bad), or You will fail in life if you - don't go to college (get a job....etc). If your parents just plain told you that you will fail...then maybe its because they feel like they failed. Maybe its just to push you to do better than them...or maybe they are not good parents. They cannot predict the future anyway. How would they know if you're going to fail...and who's defining what failing is anyway?

No, never. And if a parent does, as hard as it is the child has to try and realize that something must be wrong with the parent for the to say that. In no way should the child take that as truth in any way. No one will fail in life unless they decide to. You can be what ever you want to be. Just do it.

Not exactly, but I was sarcastically congratulated on being the "worst" of my siblings. When your parents say hurtful things, realize that they have their own issues, and it may have nothing to do with you. By letting it get you down, you just give them control over your life. It's impossible for it to not hurt at all, but take it as it is; just a comment. Parents can not predict the future, but if they said this because you are spending all your time doing drugs they might be right. Do your best and prove them wrong for your own sake.

My parents never encouraged me. Worst, they never listened to what I had to say. I must have been the loneliest kid in my entire school. The lonely weirdo. It all felt better when I went study abroad, where it didn't matter if my parents were there emotionally for me or not. And now, I love my parents still. Because without them I wouldn't be here. They're just not the greatest parents, that's all.

yes, my step father did. It made me feel very bad. This is one of the worst forms of emotional abuse, some kids actually don't try to accomplish anything in life after they are told this by there parents. I am not one of those people. I hope that you will not be either.

If your parents have said this to you, IGNORE them. I know it is hard to do, but please disregard the comment. My parents said the same thing to me and i proved them wrong...which was great!! I am a RN now and successful and NOW they want to shower their compliments on me and I am like..where were you both before all this? Parents ideas mean little in life. Just do what you need to do to have happiness. Just stay away from the things that you know will harm your life.

I have a friend that mother told her that she was worthless, stupid, and dump like her daddy, but she had to prove to herself that she could make it she graduated from High School. And she put herself through college with two small kids. She has assoc. degree and is a medical assistance, and did that without her mothers help. She wanted me tell you to keep your head up.She also, feels that the reason that some parents say that to is that when they were kids is they have went through something like that when they were smal kids.

No, in fact they are not judgemental at all. They don't push us beyond what we are capable of in studies as well as in our career. We are lucky this way. On the other hand we are now judging one of our parents for infidelity to the other! This parent is getting crap from us.

My parents would never tell me that, however, my husband's dad told him that and encouraged him to quit school. He has since gotten his GED, but it was the biggest mistake he ever made quitting to begin with, but with poor parental figures, what do you expect.
