I haven't ever heard it but I drink 3 or 4 beers and then take shots of vodka and I haven't so far got sick.
I chase my vodka with beer. I like Milwaukee's Best Ice Beer. lol

Just remember, it is a rule of thumb rather than fact. Basically means that if you have already been drinking a while, drinking something with a high alcohol concentration (i.e. liquor) is more likely to put you over the edge and make you sick than something less potent.
