hi, it all depends on the medium.

Communication on the Internet and with cell phones is all informal, especially with IM. People have found out that you do not need to take care of proper english to communicate so they are trying to apply it to other areas too. so why not, maybe it can has some use on the workplace. and I also know that we are just at the beginning, internet slang (i dont even know what to call it, i doesnt even "seem" englihs") that was found on youtube and myspace are becoming widespread, more and more.

But as i say, i all depends on the medium and the people you are communicating too. If you write an important report, if you write a book, if you write a resume, punctuationa grammar and spelling are and will always be important. As technology develops, more media appears, and people find new creative ways to use. It may appear confusing at first, but things will settle somehow. well, until another tech arrives...

No, cause there will always be an older generation to enforce the rules, and after you've been working under those expectations long enough that you're the generation at the top, you'll start to enforce the rules to maintain the respectability of your company/school. And plus some of us young people care a great deal about our spelling and grammar, especially when we want to make a good impression (like at school or work).

I certainly hope this does not happen, because clarity of communication will certainly suffer, but judging from some of the "writing" skills I see on Answers, I am afraid for the future. I don't object to the idea of instantaneous communication per se, but what might be acceptable in a quicky message does not translate well in a full-fledged business communication.

I am pleased that my kids have learned to write properly and do not use chatspeak as their primary comminication medium.

I absolutely hate that kind of stuff. I've always made it a point to use proper grammar and spelling, as any halfway-educated person should do.

It's mostly a symptom of the American obsession with fast, quick, easy. Fast food, fast cars, easy banking, quick lunches, etc. etc.

I'm a grammar freak so I correct people whenever they mispronounce or spell a word wrong.
