I took German in upper secondary. Subsequently I travelled to Germany and attended a language course there. Since going to Germany is currently not an option for you, I'd suggest finding out if there are any language-schools in the area where you live. Read German newspapers on the internet to familiarize yourself with terms and expressions. Try contacting the German embassy, resp. one of their consulates to see if they can be of any assistance. Get a good grammar book with exercises, as the German grammar usually is what most find difficult. Yet, eventually - and this goes for all languages I presume - you will have to go to somewhere where you can practice your German. It is one thing being able to comprehend what you read - that part of the vocabulary increases rapidly when you start learning the language - it is a whole other thing to talk it, to put all those words to active use.

Nevertheless, in my personal experiece, most Germans will appreciate your effort and won't be offended despite grammatical errors. Usually - a smile and polite attitude gets you far in Germany. Good luck

It is correct that almost all folks in Europe can be competent to talk english with you. Some would present you to talk English despite the fact that you talk German. This is solely looking to be well mannered and looking to make the dialog less difficult for you. If you inform them that you're finding out and that you just wish to talk German they will very so much admire. On the opposite hand you need to remember that German, in comparison to English, is relatively intricate to gain knowledge of. The grammar is way more intricate. But I believe finding out a brand new language is continuously some thing valued at doing. So why no longer simply provide it a take a look at?

As a person attempting to learn German right now, I can say I learned my first German by buying a German dictionary (a good one with pronunciations) and translating Rammstein songs!
And then I went to a bookstore and bought a a language disc that comes with a lesson book.
And I plan to take German courses sometime soon.
Don't only look at German phrases and try to translate them into English, but also look at English phrases and try translating them into German (that's a bigger challenge).

I can't fly there to live yet, either (darn taxes and high gas prices!).
