On the TV shows, they clearly are cops on CSI: MIAMI & CSI: NY
but there has been a lot of contradiction on the original CSI, set in Las Vegas. (It would appear that Nick, Sara & Warrick are but, as I said, there have been contradictions in this series.) I know they can be both in real-life but, as a general rule, wouldn't they actually be sworn police officers and would a civilian CSI ever be alowed to carry a gun? Thanks.

They can be either. In my first department, the detectives were the "CSI". In my current department, non-sworn civilians are the "CSI" people. They took specialized training to do the job.

no even the ones on TV are not cops, only the dectitive assigned to the CSI is a cop.

But in real life first most areas don't have a CSI department, and the officers merely collect the evidence, and submit it to a state crime lab.

Next the lab people don't go out in the field normally and if they do they are not investigating merely collecting evidence, if they find anything, no they don't go back out and start questioning people, they merely inform the police of what they find.

They are merely city, or state employees that work in a lab, not police officers. And no CSI lab people do not carry guns.

The way it works in most departments is that you go through the academy, graduate, do your training, and become a patrol officer. When a position opens up in the crime scene division, the people who want it put in a bid for the opening and the officer with the most seniority gets it. The same for the detective bureau, vice/narcotics division, etc. All start out as sworn police patrol officers first and move to other specialized positions as they become available.

CSI or Crime Scene Investigators are basically police detectives. Call 'em what you will, they began their career pushing a patrol car around and working thier way up the ladder.

Any law abiding citizen can apply for a permit to carry a concealed weapon. I would think most of them, though, are sworn officers.
