why do we need to study history in school?

You have had many fine answers already,If you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it. Many great men have been arrogant enough to repeat it anyways and always with great loss.
Learning and NOT repeating, IE(George bush/viet nam) Stupid waste of life, repeated history. A loosing battle, never fully acknowledged as a war, against a culture so different we can not possible win because of the alien thought process so different to ours.

History is very important in order to learn from past mistakes. A person who does not learn from the past is a fool and will make the same mistake over and over again. That is not limited to mistakes but achievements as well. You learn how to succeed at something and you remember that.

history correlates with every field of study. IE if you plan on going on to college you'll need to know where the major philosophies of your field originated from, in order to know that you'll have to understand the major philosophical inclinations of the time. Therefore what happened in the past affects the future and the development of your intellect.
