Anyone know if web accelerators are safe and really work?

Google Web Accelerator is safe if you download the original installer from Google, not a third-party site. The only thing is when you install it, make sure you only select to install the accelerator, not any add-ons it might offer you.

Accelerators work just like a Download Accelerator, what they do is have you download the site data from more than one stream, therefore information is gotten faster. As for if it really works, if you have a really slow internet connection to begin with, you might notice slight increase in speed. Otherwise its not very visible. In fact, I'd say stay away from it, its not worth the hassle of giving up RAM for a so called faster internet.

Yes, Google Web Accelerator works.
Yes it is safe.

It is NOT useful for dial-up connections.

All it does is access Google's huge amount of cached web pages on their fast servers.

Web accelerators in general are horrible pieces of software. If you want to do other things to speed up your connection then have a look at http://www.dslreports.com (it helps with all connection types not just DSL).
Go to http://www.dslreports.com/tools for tools to help you configure your connection.
It's some work, but the other s/w out there will eff up your system.
