i believe that the problem comes in where the people knocking atheists are the same small minded, people who claim to be christians and are not supposed to judge other people as per their religions teachings, yet here they show their hypocrisy as they constantly judge atheists like myself..., why, for no other reason than we don't share their point of view, c'mon people, different views are there for you to ponder, expand your minds,
atheists are not necessary non-believers, as we are so often called and deemed to be, we just don't believe in your religion or its teachings or any other religion for that matter, however we do believe in other things like the proof that science brings to us, now that is something that we can believe in, that is there for all to see..., we believe in ourselves, what could be so bad about that,
good question btw...

I'm an atheist after being born into a Christian (Baptist) family and a practicing Christian for over thirty years. (I'm 58)
I have the advantage in that I know what Christians think, Christians can only guess at what atheists think. (generally speaking on both)
Atheists have been persecuted and vilified more than any other group throughout all of history.
I wonder why there is no Holocaust Museums for atheists? Some of the first people confined in Hitler's concentration camps were atheists.
And that's why so few people admit to being atheist. Doing so subjects one to being severely discriminated against, summarily executed or imprisoned, historically speaking.

I know there are folks here who start screaming or saying most unkind things when someone speaks of being an atheist. I try to speak reasonably to them, explaining what I believe and why. I tell them how sad I am that they are setting themselves up to spend eternity in hell, and that I pray that they will see the light of Christ before it is too late. Too many people get caught up in religion. Religion (and I've been both Catholic and Protestant) has way too many rules that have nothing to do with worshiping God. I prefer to keep it simple, to love and serve my LORD with all my heart. To spread the Good News to all who will listen.

Unfortunately there hasn't been a whole lot of sincere and respectful discussion on this site between the religious folk and the atheists. It has degenerated into name calling and insults, but there have been some good, genuine questions and answers. I appreciate many of the questions that atheists raise for Christians and don't think people of faith should be threatened by honest and sincere challenges to what we believe.

Because, generally speaking, religion teaches that lack of faith, doubt, and disbelief are wrong, bad and sinful. Or at least to be avoided. This is a reasonable self defense mechanism for any religion that wants to hold on to adherents. And so when the personification of doubt, lack of faith and disbelief comes into view, of course some of the flock are going to let loose, so to speak.
I understand why. I also understand why they preach at us. It IS because they want to save us. They DO believe that we are in actual danger of hell. I appreciate the impulse. But like the dog that humps my leg, while i appreciate the thought, I really wish they would stop.

I see it the other way around. A lot of atheists like to make fun of other religions. I just think atheists are ignorant, and listen to what they want to hear and disregard absolute truth.

well, i'm a born-again christian (asked Jesus into my heart) and i don't bash on atheists or any other religion. i might have my opinions about whether they're wrong and i will tell them that, but i certainly am not going to call them names or be rude or mean. that isn't what God would want.
if you want to email or IM me at any point, feel free. God bless you and take care.

An obvious parody of a Christian who thinks that Pascal's guess is a competent argument. yet the position I finally end up when I die does not remember upon me accepting Odin. If I die an honorable lack of existence, ideally in conflict, then the Valkyries come for me and that i eventually end up contained in the mead halls of Valhalla, and get to strive against beside Odin at Ragnarök. If I die a dishonorable lack of existence then I finally end up freezing in Hel. and for this reason Europe grew to grow to be Christian. If I settle for Jesus, and die a honorable lack of existence in conflict then I have both bases coated.
