Holy war.

I looked it up.

Jihad, in Islam, the spiritual struggle against evil. Jihad is the duty of all mainstream Muslims, or Sunnites. There are four ways they may fulfill a jihad: by the heart, the tongue, the hand, and the sword. These refer to the inner, spiritual battle of the heart against vice, passion, and ignorance; spreading the word of Islam with one's tongue; choosing to do good and avoiding evil with one's hand; and waging war against non-Muslims with the sword. Most modern branches of Islam stress the inner, spiritual jihad. But Islamic law also states that all nations must surrender to Islamic rule, if not its faith. The Koran states that those who die in a jihad become martyrs of the faith, acquiring a special place in heaven.

Can the average Trekkie define seeking out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no holy war has gone before? Cue the orchestra...besides, why would we give a damn? This country might be going to hell in a handbasket, but at least we don't run around killing each other over religion for thousands of years. PEACE, LOVE, TRANQUILITY. That leaves no room for a jihad.

Average American, probably not. Thus is why evolution of the brain is about the only hope humans have left. Because when an American can't explain what a Jihad is, then they can't even realize why our "enemies" are fighting us. Total idiots.

jihad originally meant the spreading of the islamic faith, but directly translated into our current day language it means holy war. also, does being in 9th grade count as an "average education" so far? i don't want to be over or underqualified in answering the question.

OK. Off the cuff, it's supposed to be a spiritual journey of enlightenment that each believer in Islam goes on. Not what the radical fundamentalist Muslims have made it, a "holy" war against all infidels (unbelievers).

The war against smoking is turning into a jihad against people who smoke

the average American would probably define it as holy war. But I would define it more broadly as a struggle, which can be physical, but can also be an inner struggle against our own tendencies.

Jihad is a very very small wooden ship used in the civil war era....

Or it can mean holy war

JIHAD. Justifying Insane Hatred Against Doubters. WOW. I never cease to amaze myself. I'm soooo witty. If I was any more wittier I'd wet myself.

Doesn't it mean "spiritual warfare."

I might be cheating, I have read some Muslim scholars on this, who identified that the "warfare" part could be either literal or figurative (as in, fighting to save your own soul from evil). I'm not an expert in Islam, though I have read up a bit on it.
