r=radius
h=height
note: the 2 after the 2 pi r is a square

Think of taking a cylinder apart. You have a top and a bottom which are circles.
Then you have a the side of the cylinder. If you imagine cutting off the top and bottom of a can, you could then flatten it into a rectangle. The length is equal to the circumference of the circle, and the height is the height of the cylinder. A rectangle is just l x h.
So the area of the side of the cylinder is:
= C x h
= Pi x d x h
----
However, if you need to add the top and bottom you need the area of a circle:
= Pi x r^2 (squared)
For top and bottom, you have two circles:
= 2 x Pi x r^2
So putting it all together, the 3 parts are:
= ( 2 x Pi x r^2 ) + ( Pi x d x h )

well if you think about it, you have 2 circles and then a rectangle with a given height and a width that corresponds to the cicumference of the circle. Therefore, if the radius of the cylinder is R and the height is H, then the surface area:
Surface area = Pi*R^2 + Pi * R^2 + H * (2 * Pi * R)
Surface area = 2 * Pi * R^2 + 2 * Pi * R * H
Surface area = 2 * Pi * R (R + H)
(where * means multiply and Pi = 3.14159)

i think ht answer for dis is
say we start from here as the cylinder has two circular ends that adds up to 2 times 2 times pie dat is equal to 3.14 and the radius and add the 2 times 3.14 times radius and the height of da cylinder dat covers da lateral surface area

(h is the height of the cylinder, r is the radius of the cyclinder)
Surface Area = Areas of top and bottom +Area of the side
Surface Area = 2(Area of top) + (perimeter of top)* height
Surface Area = 2(pi r 2) + (2 pi r)* h This is the formula.

yo,
for example: the diameter of a circle is 4, you have to find the radious, which you have to divide 4 by 2. 4/2=2
pie(3.14)times 2in the second power.
then you get the answer.
Hope it helps you!!!!!!!!
