First of all, Where are you located and how are you buying this vehicle? If in the states you can request a CARFAX inspection and they will send out an inspector to check out the vehicle. The company that they use- SGS is impartial and has been inspecting things for over 100 years. All the inspectors have mechanical or manufacturers experience ( i have both). I think the CARFAX inspection is about 100 bucks.

Most mechanics will do a pre-purchase inspection for less than $100. They'll go over the vehicle and provide you a list of possible issues.
Just make sure they're ASE certified so that you have a leg to stand on if something happens with the vehicle.

tell the current owner that you are going to have a prepurchase inspection done, if he balks "walk away" take it to your trusted mechanic. if the car is in another city you should contact the closest dealer for the brand and arrange for the current owner to drop it off, make certian that the dealer knows that it is YOU they are working for and to fax or e mail you the results of course you will probably have to use a credit card to pay the inspection fee up front. in any event no money should change hands between you and the seller before the inspection is done. good luck

alot of dealers offer free inspections, up to 101point inspections, to try to get more work. call around and if you find one of those your set. take the inspection back with you and point out any faults to the owner and try to use it as bargaining power, don't forget to get estimates from the shop while you are there.

Try SGIO, they do inspections and are more reasonably priced than the RAC. Jules, Mechanic, lecturer, Western Australia

take it on a test drive straight to an EXPERIANCED mechanic. you may notice something odd while driving it. you can also look for more obvious things yourself. general rule of thumb: if there's a puddle underneath it that isnt rainwater, there's somethin screwed up in it
