The only fact I know is that more than 90% of the world's Muslims are of the Sunni faction. Shi'a's are the minority.

They differ on who should have succeeded the Prophet (pbuh) after his death.
Shi'a :believe it should have been/is Ali Bin Abi Talib who is a relative of the Prophet (cousin, and also husband to the Prophet's daughter Fatima)
Sunni: believe the Prophet (pbuh) deliberately declined to designate a successor but the people's choice was dear friend (to the Prophet) Abu Bakr, followed by Umar, Uthman and then Ali Bin Abi Talib (may Allah be please with them all). Who are known as the Caliphs.
This is the main cause of their division.
hope it was simple and clear
peace unto you

Different philosophy by different ancient leaders. Sunni are more blood thirsty but the Wahabii have them all beat for killing!

on the one hand the group thinks prophet muhammeds son should have been the guy to carry on
and the other thought it was his older friend
everything stems from this, was it a king who passed on legacy or was it the guy who was not offspring
