Try the sites of your local library, Library of Congress and any university library you may have access to. Also use whatever facts you already know as a starting point--for example if you know the entrypoint for any of your ancestors (eg., Ellis Island) you can do a search there. Do a search based on the family associations or cultural heritage societies in the areas that you know you had family members. Below are two sites to get you started.

Free sites listed below. I checked out a book at the library called "The Family Tree Resource Book for Genealogists". It has all the states, countys, when they were formed, addresses, phone numbers, and web sites for each county. Where birth, death, probate, court, land, naturalization, marriages, and military records are located. Lists the dates of the year that those records began and what county to look in if they were born before that county was created. All those web sites are free and they take you directly to the county you need. Under these sites you can find older records that are available to the public for free. Unless, you would like to order a certain record that is up to you. It is a great resource, it tells you everything you need to find certain records. If you do have a library that has a genealogy department, they may have a subscription to Ancestry.com. As long as you have a library card, it is free. The Latter Day Saints web site, scroll down to family history and start your search.

Do it yourself by using internet and your local library, remember a library can get books thru inter-library loan, book from anywhere. Also your library card is probably good at several libraries. Look for obituaries, they are full of info. Also start with your oldest family member and look for family bible.

i have yet to find a website for family trees that dont require a payment . and i refuse to pay for something that might give incorrect info .

Why don't you go to an LDS center or public library with census records? That is free.
