I do not want this to happen again, but do I take the puppies from their mom? What should I do to prevent this from hapenning again?

Some breeders gather up all the puppies when the mom gets up and then when she lays back down give them all back. Every time she gets up or lays down. It means you have to be there 24 hr a day (wonder why dog breeding is not for the faint of heart?). Raising them by hand yourself without the mom is worse & the fatiality rate in that case is often high.

In March my female gave birth to a litter of pups. THe day after giving birth I found that she had accidentally lied down on one and smothered it. It does happen. And I was just as heart broken. The mother should be allowed to stay with her pups. Taking the pups away can result in beahviour issues for the mother and the pups. Pups need their mother not ony for food but for socalization. Leave her be and just make sure her area with the pups is large enough for her to enter and exit to avoid the pups. The whelping box should be at least two times the mothers size streached out.

No, do not take the puppies away from their mother. They need the milk and nourishment that she can give them. It is true that you can give them milk that you can buy at the store and mix up (for puppies), but it also lacks what the mother can give them. I don't know what to suggest because I have never been in this situation, but I know that you should not take the puppies away from their mother.
Sorry I can't be of more help!

I know how you feel, my dog layed on one of her puppies and it dies. It was SO sad. Make sure the puppies are getting enough nutrition and aren't weak, if they are weak they will die easier. If there isn't enough milk, give the mom a puppy milk replacer. You should keep a close eye on her and the puppies. You could keep the puppies in a box w/ a heating pad, and bring them to the mother every time they need to eat. Just watch them carefully. She layed on another puppy but it lived, because someone was there to help.

I think that depends on how old the puppies are, you really should not "take" the puppies away from the mother until they are 6 wks old. My boyfriend and i just got an American Bulldog and we had to wait until he was 6 wks to pick him up. If the puppies younger than 6 wks. and you decide you want to take the puppies away, call a vet to ask how to care for them without the mother so they won't die. M

you should watch the puppies when your dog is w/ them
and if your dog tries to get up move the puppies out of the way
cuz you don't want any more to die :(
but dont take them away
but it depends on how old they are

You should leave the pups with their mom. I had the exact same thing happen with my cat. She had 4 kittens and she killed all but 1. Watch them carefully.

don't take them away it shouldn't happen again she will probably be more carefull from now on but if you take them away you will have to bottle feed them every 2hrs day and nigt, help them relieve theirself after they eat, keep them warm, take your other dog to the vet to get her milk dried up. Dont take them away

just watch very carefully that the mother dog will not step on them, if they don't get the right milk then they all will die, i'm sorry so she has to nourish them.
