Some people become addicted to lying. Others do it casually for cover. People constantly worry about what other people will think and the consequences of revealing the truth. Therefore, they lie to make things seem better than they actually are.

Hi yer, you've struck a chord with me, I don't like lies, or even worse liers, like most folks, am not saying that I have'nt lied, sometime you have to, now in religous terms the first sin on earth, was a lie, when Satan, told Eve that it was okay to pick the apple off the tree of knowledge, when God told her not to touch the tree, or even cast an eye on it, basically the Devil lied, saying it was okay, when lucifer must have known, that God had allready given a command, so listen to God people, and be obedient as you can, then you won't go far wrong, unlike poor old Adam and Eve (I'm sure they regretted doing that, during & afterwards, but could'nt help themselves, like us sometimes) as the saying goes, Satan is the prince of Lies.....

It might make others feel good (No you're bum looks fine in that) or sometimes it's a good story and people know it's a lie so it's funny. Although I did know a girl at school who told us she was pregnant like 5 times and she kept having miscarraiges, then she told us that she had cancer, but that took the mick so I'm not really friends with her any more. I think she just wanted attention or thought we wouldn't like her if she weren't amazingly interesting! I lied to my friend yesterday, said I had to work today to get out of meeting her... I guess everybody has their reasons.

Sometimes people tell lies to protect themselves. They also tell lies to protect others. For example: If my friend was having a birthday party but only some girls in the class were invited and she didn't want people to know about it, then if some one who wasn't invited asked me about it I would lie and say I didn't know either. I would do this to protect my friend from getting her feelings hurt if one of the girls that wasn't invited found out about it and then got mad at the girl who was having the party. Actually, that has happened to me before and then she found out that I was invited at the end too! It was a horrible situation. So to everyone reading this: "Never put yourself in the situation where you are needing to lie!"

I thinks it's to get attention and try to fit in. I know people who are pathological liars and every thing that comes out of their mouths are lies. They believe them, how scary is that. People just need to stick with the truth and stop the lies.

The only reason to tell a lie is to deceive the listener.
Motives for wanting to deceive the listener vary, but generally people will deceive the listener in order to either a) protect the listener or b) protect themselves.

I think that the majority of lies are white ones we tell to prevent from hurting people's feelings.

Like "Does my bum look big in this" We don't ever consider saying yes do we?

I also think that most people don't tell out and out lies most of the time. (except things like above)
