My brother had a Irish Setter with HOD last year. He did fine and is totally fine now.
I guess you need to research and see what you can find and make sure you are dealing with a good vet.
The disease is ususlly self-limiting and dogs recover well. I guess Weimers get a more severe form of the disease and can die without treatment.
Usual treatment is pain relief and steroids until it clears up. I guess unless you have a Weimer and it is unusually bad, then I would not jump to euthanasia right away.

I would work very closely with a vet brfor making any type decision.
I have Weims and we have never had a problem with HOD and I am glad, It is horrible.
Make sure you are feeding right and trying to control pain for the dog.
It sounds like recovery is possible. I would work very closely with the vet and most likely get a second opinion.

no, but i do think that it should be put to sleep, not that i don't like animals, i love them! but it's better to have a short and good life rather than a long and bad life. have you watched pirates of the caribbean? it's like the pirates; they live forever but they are totally miserable.
