well I just rang my ex after I haven't spoken to her for a very long time (not ignoring her or anything, we just left each others lives). I didn't have any alternative plans, I just wanted to out for a coffee and see how life was treating her these days, whats new... you know catch up.

It's a possibility, that he/she may feel regrets about their attitude towards you in the past, and wants to apologize and make up for lost time. Then again, maybe they just wanted to check on you and make sure evrything was okay, and see how you were doing.

I would think that the just want to talk. I get this kind of thing all the time. Usually they just want to see how you're doing and to talk.

I would think he wanted something. Wouldbe very leary of talking with him at all.
My thoughts would be:
a relationship just ended for him and he is lonely
he wants something
etc
