Get a litter box as some people have suggested, but teach the cats or kittens that you don't want them to go to the bathroom wherever they want to. Put the seat down every time you or someone Else uses the bathroom. You might have to remind your company about that when they come to visit you. I do this with my company. You might have to cheek after they have used your bathroom to make sure they did this for you and explain to them why if they don't understand why your doing this. If they are real friends they will understand. Your cats have to understand the word NO and not to mess where they want to. I hope that this will help a bit. I also think that maybe until the problem is solved I would close all doors to your rooms in your house so that if the cats makes messes you will have an idea of where you might find them, to clean up the mess.

This is called "surface preference". Most kittens are given a litter box to use, so they associate cat litter under their paws with the idea of toilet. But yours seem to prefer either a carpet or lino or newspaper - which one are they most likely to use?
Lets hope its newspaper, you can put a newspaper in a litter tray and teach them to use that. Bait it with some of their poo to get the smell right. Empty it frequently or they won't use it.
Its pointless to punish an animal for going in the wrong place, they just learn to wait til your not around.
And you should avoid putting the litter tray and the food in the same room. They hate that as much as you would and for the same reason.
If they won't use the garden at all, is it because they are afraid of another cat that has staked it out as their territory? Its unusual, because cats prefer to bury their dirt.
Cats may also go indoors because of stress, ask your vet to put you in touch with an animal behaviourist and they'll help you sort it out.

My Rx's cat was funny when he did it, he uses his cat litter but wen we are out, he comes from downstairs and stands by the door to be let out - because he knows what he did wrong- he peed on the carpet in the bathroom - i used to Lil and say at least he knows what the bathroom is for. When he sadly had to be put down she had 2 kittens form the rescue centre (8 weeks old) and she was dreading it a bit - especially when they wanted to pee - we had a cat litter and automatically they used it every time, not once peed in the house.

get a litter box, and keep them only in a small room with the box for at least a week. Keep it clean, change the litter at least every second day, scrub the places they have soiled with bleach, then vinegar(not together) and throw out anything portable they have 'gone' on. Keep cleaning until there is no scent of them going, then put plastic down on places they have gone before. then let them out, but watch them. If they start going places they shouldn't, put them back in the litter room. until you can get rid of them. They won't stop.

make sure you have one litter tray for every cat you have, for example, if you have 2 cats, have 2 litter trays, cats are very clever, and will often try to 'get one up' on the other cat, and will block the route to the litter tray, so if there is more than one, then it should help solve the problem. Good luck!!

Get a litter tray and train them to go in it by putting their food there or a saucer of milk and make sure its near your back door.
It's amazing how they pick up where their food and drink are.
