You are liable for the damage that a negligent driver that you allowed to drive causes. If the damages are more than your policy limits, you have to pay the difference. The person you loaned the car to is also liable. You can both be sued, and a judgment issued.

Fire4511 is absolutely correct. Both you as the vehicle owner and the person driving it are liable. If your insurance is not enough to cover the damages, you'll both probably be sued.

Excess liability coverage is cheap compared to the minimum legal requirement. You should always buy as much liability coverage as the insurance company will sell you. I have 300/500/100 coverage and it only costs me about $80.00 a year above minimum liability.

Unless the person driving your car was excluded by name on the policy, your insurance will cover the damage up to your policy limits. If the driver was excluded, you have no insurance coverage for the accident.

As the registered owner, the car was under your care and control no matter who was driving (unless it was stolen and reported as such)

Be prepared to pay.
