I am more familiar with Martin O'Neill so naturally I would have preferred him but McClaren has the job and I wish him the best. He has understudied the most successful England manager ever (apart from not winning the world cup, Sven has statistically, the best winning record in competitive matches despite what people say) . I wish Steve McClaren all the best and I hope he makes a name for himself. Opportunity knocks but once.

O'Neils Irish isn't he ??
Na, Stick with McClaren. Not only has he been the 2nd in command as England 2nd coach for a few years, getting all the experience needed to put him in good stead for the top, but he's also ENGLISH !!

Come on folks, Steve McClaren has had experience of working with top players. He has got a mediocre Middlesborough team to play above their station and break the glass ceiling of winning trophies. He has experience of WINNING in European competition and as Eriksson's assistant, his promotion represents the continuity needed to be successful in football. On top of all that, I think he also has the 'innovative ideas' that Big Sam doubtlessly has: sports science, opta stats, extensive research into opponents, diet and nutrition. His assistant at Boro was a sports psychologist. One of those to get England thinking differently (and not believing all the negativity surrounding the national team's prospects in tournaments) will be VERY important.

Of the two I would have prefered O'neill. He has a better record. If I could have anyone I think it would really be good if Bobby Robson came out of retirement. He is the best of the best.

Martin O'Neill without a doubt. More presence, more personality and more capability.

Martin O'Neil has apat from managerial skills , the people skills to get the best out of big headed, overpayed, over rated players...this man goes for the best players not the biggest names.I am a Celt and for the years he gained legendary status, not for leading us to a european cup final but to how he shaped that amazing team.he made gd players out of reserve players.absoulute legend but then again I support a better team.....watch scotland 2008 !

looking at their squad for the world cup I think either would be a wrong choice, the current team won't make the quarter finals, so any new manager would be dismissed straight afterwards.
its a hopeless task and I don't think either of those managers deserve to be grilled, which is what would happen to them.
the team are spoiled and overpaid by way too much they have too much say in who manages them.
anyway the best is yet to come ???
