You have given us nothing to go on- where are you going? What do you want to see? How are you travelling within China?

Okay- I worked there last year and earnt 4500 RMB/ month and I only spent on food a MAX of 1000/ mth, so I think you could easily live on 8000 RMB for 2 months. This converts to about $1000 US- yes, that's less than what everyone has said here so far!

Okay, some prices to help get you started)
-Trains (hard sleeper) are maybe about 3-400 (from Xian to Beijing)
-Food- anything from jiaozi/ baozi for 5RMB to Maccas, KFC etc for up to 30 RMB.
-A lot of attractions eg Summer Palace, Forbidden City are 50 RMB.

Then you want things like film etc....and if you're off to Tibet that's a whole different story with prices!

Since we do not know how you mean to travel (by train, plane, bus, etc.) or what class of hotel you might stay in or whether you plan to eat with the natives, etc., we cannot come close to being correctly responsive to your question. Perhaps you could get some good information at frommers.com.

if you are not a big spender maybe about $2k, that is $1k every month. that's a fact because i didn't spend more than a thousand per month during my stay. unless you are planning to buy real antiques that are available then you have to bring more. reminder, no pirated VCD / DVD please.

Depends on where you want to go and your lifestyle. Shanghai is more expensive than Chengdu for example. If you want to stay in expensive hotels it's more expensive.
