The primary reason is that nut trees take a long time from planting until harvest. Demand has been increasing the last 5 years and the number of acres in nuts has not. Becaue of urban sprawl, finding new areas for plantations has been hard for some varieties. Plus, in a few areas, production has been off because of weather and pests. Most of the major buyers are now getting pressure to insure that the laborers in this industry are paid a decent salary. Result is higher prices. Some varieties, e.g. brazil nuts, have been going up as much as $1000/ton/year. Peanuts aren't quite as succeptible to these factors, but when the price of the others go up, peanut growers can raise their prices as well.
