... I can not get him to stand up and pee. He insists on sitting. I have had my boyfriend try to show him and even tried the old cheerio trick but nothing will work. One of the little boys at daycare even tried showing him how to do it and he will stand there and just hold it and make the comment "it's stuck" (meaning the pee). I'm not too concerned right now becuase he is still kind of young, but I don't want him to be in gradschool and still sitting on the potty instead of standing like boys do. Any suggustions?

Ok, so some don't know the old cheerio trick.. all it is is you drop a cheerio or 2 in the water and let the boys try to sink it with their pee. It's good practice for the older men too! LOL at least then they get it IN the bowl and not all over the seat!! HA HA HA

And yes, I meant grade school, not grad school.

Just give him time. My son did the same thing. He will stand when he's comfortable. My son goes back and forth standing 1 day sitting the next and he's 7

I only have girls, so I don't have any specific insight, but I'd make the two following comments:
1) Little kids are very malleable, and change constantly. A pretty good bet he'll get over it and making a big deal of it now will do as much harm as good.
2) When you said, "I don't want him to be in gradschool and still sitting on the potty instead of standing like boys do", I'm betting you meant grade school, but it was much more amusing reading it as grad school heh

LOL. I'm laughing because I thought I was the only one in this situation. I have a 3½ years old boy and he keep sitting instead of standing up in the toilet. My his dad have try to teach him but nothing work.(the cheerio trick too LOL) If you find out something that really work let me know.

Who says that a boy has to stand to pee? I am potty training my boy and I don't make him stand I let him sit which is fine and later if he wants to stand then he can if not he can sit. Just because we think a boy pees standing up it isn't always like that.

Have you tried rewarding him? Say something like "if you do it standing up, we can go see a movie" or give him something new that he wants if he does it. Don't punish him for not doing it. Maybe give him privacy, let him do it on his own. Be supportive. Say you still love him even if he won't do it. Give him praise for his efforts. It will probably take time, but if you give him enough support, he's bound to get the hang of it. And even if he doesn't, at least you don't have to worry about messes on the toilet seat.

I had the same problem trying to break my nephew out of using the "big boy potty"/toilet like his "baby potty".It may sound kind of funny, but try sitting him on the toilet backwards ( so he is facing the back out the seat). I tried this with my nephew and after a couple of weeks he got used to facing that way and eventually he stood up to pee .
Hope this helps :)

It is always fun to go pee outside. It's really no big deal, he's got awhile yet. Sitting down for him now is so normal. I wouldn't worry about it. When he see other boys standing up to pee he will follow along. He will probably be doing it before then anyway.

Just leave him be. I actually heard on some news show that it is more sanitary and more comfortable for boys to sit and pee. Think about it- no drips on the seat, no slashes on the walls, and it is less stressfull on the body to sit then to stand. I don't know if this is true but it is something to think about.

Not a problem. Probably when he starts school and sees the older boys using the urinal will he suddenly want to too. My son started kindergarten in Feb and used to pull his pants down to use the trough, but since he saw other boys just unzipping their fly he started doing the same thing.
