That is such a tough call. All I did as a kid was read. I would have to say "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen. This kid is in a Cessna headed to Canada to visit his mom when the pilot has a heart attack. The plane crashes into a lake and the city kid basically learns how to survive in the wild relying on the hatchet his dad gave him just before he left. I always played make believe that I was in the wild trying to survive, so I was naturally drawn to this book.
ooh indiantrumpet I loved Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I forgot all about that book!

When I was a kid (between 9-12) I read hundreds of "Doc Savage" books that my grandfather gave me. Doc Savage was the main character in a series of pulp novel's from the 20's and 30's and they were just fantastic. Talk about opening my imagination to other worlds, friendship, bonds between manly men (no snickering allowed), how to use your brain to solve problems, they were great.

In "Death Be Not Proud," John Gunther explores the process of death: discovery, fighting, living on, and then dying.
I read it at least ten times, imagining that somehow it might end differently.
