I am- been my whole life as far as I can tell. ADD that is. I am 49 now- I was diagnosed at about age 40. My early history was being quite distractable, daydreaming a lot in school, being unable to focus on projects for more than a few minutes at a time, being only motivated by sheer deadlines and absolute adrenaline producing situations. Could never finish cleaning my room or my house. In high school I did a lot of shoplifting and freight train hopping just for the adrenaline rush of it- I was truly an adrenaline junkie-- quite addicted to my own brain chemicals. As mentioned I was diagnosed at age 40- treatment with stimulants was successful- helped me FOCUS my attention and achieve more success in my life. The one aspect of ADD folks is that while we are quite distractable, we can also sometimes "hyperfocus" on a project and block out all other stimuli for many hours at a time- we get to be good at it- it's a survival skill. ADD/ADHD cannot be diagnosed by paper and pencil psychological testing but instead by interview and history of behaviors. ADHD is the stereotypical hyperactive child, easily identified as disruptive in the classroom- ADD kids/adults are harder to identify.

I have it. I'm 38. I was diagnosed in second grade. It does not cause Bi-Polar if untreated. It is a problem that people without it would not understand. It does not mean you have a low IQ, mine is 137 on average. It can cause learning trouble, it's hard to stay focused on things that do not interest you. The majority of people I know who have ADHD have IQ's of 130 or above. I heard some very ignorant opinions of what people think people with ADHD are like or how smart they are or are not. It's very disconcerting that people read a few articles on ADHD and think they understand it. Even several doctors are ignorant to ADHD and I do believe that it is over diagnosed. It is possible to live a normal life without medication, although it can be difficult, but not impossible. People with ADHD do have many struggles and may not be able to learn in the same conventional ways people without it do. I could not work out my math problems in school because I would get distracted and lose where I was at. If I was allowed to just calculate the problem in my head I was %100 dead on. If it interests me, I can remember and retain numbers very well. I could retain immediate information to be able to ace tests I was not interested in. However, I would need to brush up on the subject later on to recall it unless it was a subject that interested me. I do have to work hard at staying focused. I do have to deal with impulsive decisions. I did not grow out of it. I was put in special ED in 6th grade for math because the teacher thought I didn't get it. Problem was it was not that I didn't get it I was just bored. Once in special ED for a week and it was determined I was gifted. I could write a book on the affects ADHD has had on my life. And there are a lot of things it affects. But it still bothers me when I hear or read stupid ignorant responses, and some of those even come from people with ADHD.

My brother and I are both ADHD. We're 23 and 24, and I don't see us "growing out of it" any time soon.
