knots is a unit of measurement as is statute miles or MPH there are several on-line calculators that will translate for you or you could use a calculator. Knots will always be a smaller number in comparison to statute. Try landings.com for an on-line calculator.

Knot usually for plane or for ship that travel not in a flat ground as we can measure them in mph. As plan or ship travel on curve (world is a sphere), it is not practical to measure them like our car which is travel on flat ground.
1 knot = 1 noutical miles = 1.15 miles/hour on flat ground.

a mile per hour..is the speed of 5280 feet per hour
a knot..is going 6076 feet per hour
a knot is derived by taking one minute..of ONE degree at the equator (360 total degrees...so 1/60th of 1 degree of the Earth is a nautical mile...6076 feet)
so the knot is determined by that measurement..and is what is used in almost all navigation (boating, flying, etc)
